During the spring semester of 2019/2020, in the MSc2 elective studio of Architecture and Urban Design, we undertook the challenge of conceptualizing the development of Amsterdam's Haven-stad area. This site has a history of intensive use, having functioned as the active harbor for Amsterdam, driving the development of complex infrastructure on both land and water. Important routes intersect here, including the A10 highway and railway connections to the major Amsterdam Sloterdijk station. Additionally, Haven-stad holds significance in Amsterdam's urban plans, serving as the locus for finalizing concepts for an efficient and cohesive public transport network. It's also home to Westerpark, an integral part of the sequence of urban green spaces known as The Main Green Structure. Nevertheless, Haven-stad grapples with numerous issues. To align with Amsterdam's metropolitan aspirations, a transformative plan is required, converting this spatially and functionally zoned harbor area into a multifunctional, intensively used, sustainable, and welcoming environment for both living and working.
Strategy
(Group Project)
The green loops introduce a fresh urban structure, acting as a foundational framework for the widespread green spaces within Haven-stad. By integrating new sub-loops with the main loop, we enhance the potential for enjoyable, unhurried movement to Mercuriushaven and Sloterdijk Centrum. Simultaneously, the main loop is repositioned to follow the railway, offering an alternative to the existing path through Westerpark and allotments. Alongside Transformatorweg's boulevard, this novel network of greenery seamlessly merges with the established urban fabric, ultimately contributing to the evolving lifestyles within Haven-stad.

Spatial Framework
Haven-Stad Metro Station
(Individual Project)
The Haven-stad metro station is poised to assume a pivotal role as a forthcoming intermodal hub, seamlessly linking commuters to Amsterdam Centraal and Sloterdijk station in mere minutes. Moreover, connections across the IJ River can be established via waterborne ferries and aerial cable cars. Nestled along the proposed Green Loops, this new metro station will serve as a mediator, facilitating transitions between swift and leisurely modes of travel. This is further supported by amenities, fostering a smoother integration. Within this segment of the Green Loops, diverse elements converge harmoniously: the aforementioned metro station, the Transformatorweg boulevard, mixed-use structures, and sports and recreational facilities. The municipality's strategy is to develop Haven-stad into a multifunctional, densely populated area predominantly designed for residence and work, supplemented by sports fields promoting healthy lifestyles. This project envisions how the Green Loops can shape a more livable future for Haven-stad, characterized by a well-rounded blend of living, working, and recreational pursuits.
